Real Repugnance and our Ignorance of Things-in-Themselves: A Lockean Problem in Kant and Hegel

Kant and Hegel on Aesthetic Reflexivity
The paper aims at reevaluating a conception of the aesthetic that was developed by Kant and Hegel but that has been widely neglected due to the fact that their positions in aesthetics have been wrongly considered to be antagonistic to one another. The conception states that the aesthetic is a practice of reflecting on other human practices. Kant was the first to articulate this conception, but ...
CHAPTER 7 Real Repugnance and Belief about Things - in - Themselves : A Problem and Kant ’ s Three Solutions
Kant famously claims that it can be rational to accept propositions on the basis of non-epistemic or broadly practical considerations, under certain circumstances, even if those propositions include “transcendental ideas” of supersensible objects. But he also worries about how such “ideas” (of freedom, the soul, noumenal grounds, God, the kingdom of ends, things-in-themselves generally) acquire...
Hegel’s Ethics
My purpose in this article is not to offer any original insights into Hegel’s ethics, but merely to provide a brief overview that draws upon the most reliable secondary sources. In order to help organize the material, I compare Hegel’s views with the communitarian critique of liberalism. Following this, there is a brief account of the relation between Hegel’s ethical and religious thought. Hege...
Modal Motivations for Noumenal Ignorance: Knowledge, Cognition, and Coherence
My goal in this paper is to show that Kant’s prohibition on certain kinds of knowledge of things-in-themselves is motivated less by his anti-soporific encounter with Hume than by his new view of the distinction between “real” and “logical” modality, a view that developed out of his reflection on the rationalist tradition in which he was trained. In brief: at some point in the 1770’s, Kant came ...
Dynamical behavior of a stage structured prey-predator model
In this paper, a new stage structured prey-predator model with linear functional response is proposed and studied. The stages for prey have been considered. The proposed mathematical model consists of three nonlinear ordinary differential equations to describe the interaction among juvenile prey, adult prey and predator populations. The model is analyzed by using linear stability analysis to ob...
